It\u2019s a strategic document that should answer one question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why should we want <\/strong><strong><em>you<\/em><\/strong><strong> in this role \u2014 right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are three of the most common mistakes I see \u2014 and what to do instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Leading with Responsibilities Instead of Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to fall into the trap of listing your job duties:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Led infrastructure projects<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Managed cross-functional teams<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Oversaw cloud migrations<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are fine \u2014 but they\u2019re not memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Better:<\/strong> Highlight the <em>outcome<\/em> of your leadership. Numbers, results, and transformations are what hiring teams notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Led $5M infrastructure overhaul that cut downtime by 40%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Managed 10-person DevOps team to deliver a scalable CI\/CD pipeline ahead of schedule<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Oversaw global cloud migration across 6 regions with zero disruption to end users<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Burying the Good Stuff<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I often find your biggest wins on page 2\u2026 or hidden under generic titles like \u201cKey Achievements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve led a turnaround, scaled a product, or delivered high-stakes results \u2014 <strong>that needs to be front and center<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of your resume like a product launch. You wouldn\u2019t tuck the best features in the fine print.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Using Outdated Formats or Language<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing says \u201cout of touch\u201d like a cluttered layout, a lengthy objective statement, or buzzwords with no context (\u201cdynamic leader with proven track record\u2026\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use a clean, modern layout (bullet points, white space, no headshots or fancy graphics).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skip the \u201cObjective\u201d and start with a short, 3-4 line professional summary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show, don\u2019t tell.
